Do I need to read the Red Letter Hotel series first?
No — DBB works as a standalone series. Rikyava appears in RLH as a supporting character, but all the context you need is established in Book 1 of DBB. RLH readers will have extra background, but it’s not required.

Is the tone similar to RLH, or different?
Different. RLH is set in a glamorous Moroccan supernatural hotel with a high-fantasy fae atmosphere. DBB is set in gritty Viking Scandinavia — warrior clans, dragon courts, dark magic, and an undead enemy. The heat level in DBB is also more explicit (open-door vs. RLH’s high heat).
